What to Expect on a Sunday Morning

When do you worship?

We offer services at 8:00 and 10:00 am on Sunday morning. The 8:00 am service has no music at all, while at the 10:00 am there is both music and singing. In every other respect the two services are the same. The 10:00 am service is also livestreamed through our YouTube page.

How should I dress?

People wear a wide range of clothing! Some come dressed more formally while most wear casual clothes. Wear whatever makes you most comfortable.

What does worship look like?

At worship we sing, we pray, we listen to scripture, we reflect on those scriptures through a sermon, and we share in the bread and wine of Holy Communion. The service is “liturgical,” which means that it follows forms and prayers that don’t change greatly from week to week during a season of the year. This sameness gives worship a rhythm that becomes comforting and familiar to worshipers.

For the first-time visitor, the service may be exhilarating or confusing. Services may involve standing, sitting, kneeling, sung or spoken responses, and other elements that may provide a challenge for you if you are a first-time visitor. However, liturgical worship can be compared with a dance: once you learn the steps, you come to appreciate the rhythm, and it becomes satisfying to dance, again and again, as the music changes.

Do you have communion every Sunday?

Yes! It is normal in most Episcopal Churches to have communion every Sunday. We understand Holy Communion (which we call “Holy Eucharist”) to be the principal form of worship for Christians. By receiving the bread and wine (the Body and Blood of Christ) we are sustained by God’s grace in the week ahead.

All persons who have been baptized are invited to receive communion. Our tradition is to come to the rail at the front of the sanctuary and stand or kneel to do so. If you do not wish to receive or have not been baptized, you are invited up for a blessing from the priest during that time. Just cross your arms over your chest to indicate you are not receiving.

We use real wine and not grape juice, so if you wish to only take the bread then you may do so and cross your arms over your chest as the chalice comes by.

Do you have childcare or instruction for children?

Yes! Children are important to us. Our nursery (ages 0-4) is open from September through May and our Church School for Children is open from October through May. Click here to read more. Feel free to ask the person who hands you a bulletin to direct you to where to go.
